2023 has set a record for the UK as the second hottest year with a mean temperature of 9.97°C. The hottest year was just before it in 2022 with a mean temperature of 10.03°C. This temperature would have been close to non-existent in the pre-industrial climate. However, human activities have made it very common, and such temperatures are predicted to occur annually.
It was stated that 2023 might be the hottest year globally. Last October, global temperatures increased by 1.4°C compared to the pre-industrial norm. With the new Paris Agreement targets issued last December to move away from fossil fuels, 200 countries are now working to limit global temperatures to under 2°C, optimally aiming for 1.5°C above pre-industrial averages.
