Offshore Wind Growth Leads in Germany

In May 2024, Germany published its first drop in solar energy growth, decreasing by 231 MW, falling under 1 GW since February 2023. To meet the 2030 target of 215 GW, the country must focus on increasing solar power by 1.6 GW monthly. Currently, solar capacity hovers around 88.9 GW, with approved plans for 17 GW to be built this year. 

Onshore wind saw the least growth since January 2023, increasing only by 28 MW. To satisfy the 2030 goal of 115 GW, Germany requires a further 673 MW of onshore wind capacity monthly. Current onshore capacity is 61.8 GW, with an additional 280 MW of approved projects pending construction.

Offshore wind experienced the greatest growth, surging by 211 MW, a three-year high of 8.7 GW. To fulfill the 2030 objective of 30 GW, Germany must grow offshore by 270 MW monthly with current approved permits at 2.44 GW of offshore wind capacity pending construction.
