New Insurance Pathways Enhance the Integrity of Aviation Carbon Credits

The Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA) has been expanded to accept a greater quantity of carbon credits following the introduction of revised insurance criteria. These criteria facilitate additional pathways for credits to align with Article 6 of the Paris Agreement, a development of considerable importance as the claims made by host countries frequently overlap with those asserted by international aviation operators.

The newly established mechanisms will enable international aviation to utilize carbon credits for CORSIA, provided that the insurance guarantees compensation or replacement in instances of double claiming. This policy is designed to ensure that investments can yield substantial returns in the future, despite the associated high risks. Simultaneously, it upholds environmental standards and broadens market accessibility.

The revised frameworks enhance flexibility in meeting regulatory requirements while simultaneously increasing the availability of aviation compliance credits and instilling greater confidence in claims made within the carbon market. These newly implemented policies are intended to support the international aviation offset market and are essential for the advancement of global carbon markets.
