The Bonn Talks climate meeting on draft carbon market rules made minimal headway, months ahead of the 2024 United Nations (UN) Climate Change Conference (COP29).
Discussions and disputes were concentrated on records management, including how credits should be earned, approved, and/or canceled. The UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) holds hope that the supervisory body will reach an agreement before COP29. The Bonn Talks also addressed carbon credits for emissions avoidance; it was ultimately deferred until 2028.
Despite the limited progress, Carbon Market Watch praised the transparency of the talks, commending the UNFCCC for introducing a code of conduct for confidential trade agreement information.
