The EU Parliament recently approved a new law banning corporate usage of misleading claims pertaining to the environment, carbon offsetting and premature product replacement. This means that using offsetting schemes or scientifically unsupported commitments is no longer allowed for companies to use on their products. Discussions are underway of a legislative proposal on extending the greenwashing ban to individual companies.
The list of banned labeling and claims majorly includes anything related to unverified or unattested environmental claims; only official certifications verified by public authorities are allowed.
EU member states will need to approve the directive and will have a two-year period to incorporate it into the national legal framework.
