Germany remains committed to eradicating coal usage by 2038, and will not accelerate this timeline through legislative means. Instead, the country is taking a market-driven approach by endorsing the EU Emissions Trading System commitment to halt coal use in the western region of Rhineland by 2030. This, along with renewable energy sources expansion and modernization of power plants, is propelling the 2038 transition. Still, to effectively offset coal-fired power plants, renewable sources will need to provide 20-25 gigawatts of new energy capacity to consistently replace coal. Yet, the extension of onshore wind farms has been slow at best, and financial backing remains unclear.
