The European Biogas Association (EBA) and Gas Infrastructure Europe (GIE), along with their partners, have published the latest edition of the Biomethane Map, which indicates a significant 37% increase in biomethane production capacity across Europe over the past year. As of mid-2024, Europe is home to a total of 1,548 biomethane plants, yielding a combined production capacity of 6.4 billion cubic meters per year (bcm/y) of biomethane. Within the EU-27, 1,264 plants are contributing a capacity of 5.2 bcm/y.
The production of biomethane is essential for the strategic decarbonization efforts of Europe. Consequently, the EBA 2023 report indicates that biomethane production for the year reached 4.9 bcm, reflecting a 21% increase compared to the previous year. Current statistics reveal that biomethane accounts for approximately 6% of the total gas demand in Europe. Europe is on course to meet the REPower EU target of 35 bcm by 2030.
Furthermore, the Biomethane Map highlights the geographical diversification of biomethane production facilities. France, Germany, and Denmark are the leading producers of biomethane, with several Central and Eastern European nations rapidly advancing in this sector. As policy investments grow, biomethane production is poised to increase, thus supporting Europe in achieving its climate, energy, and gas objectives.
