Why this project

Closing the financing gap in maritime decarbonization

Only a handful of shipping projects worldwide have reached full registration under GS 422 — positioning this fleet as a first-mover opportunity.

Shipping moves roughly 80% of world trade by volume yet accounts for about 3% of global greenhouse gas emissions, making it one of the priority sectors for decarbonization. Vessels have long operational lifetimes and fleet renewal requires significant capital, so efficiency retrofits — like the propeller upgrades fitted across this four-vessel container fleet, deliver fuel and emissions savings over many years but require meaningful upfront investment. Voluntary carbon markets help close that financing gap. By converting measured fuel savings into a recurring stream of carbon, retrofit projects improve project economics, shorten payback periods and strengthen the case for early adoption — complementing compliance frameworks such as the IMO’s GHG Strategy, FuelEU Maritime and the EU ETS, which are increasingly pricing in the cost of unabated emissions.

Supply of shipping credits under the Gold Standard remains scarce. That scarcity, paired with hardening compliance pressure and growing demand from cargo owners for credible Scope 3 reductions, positions early, fully-registered retrofit programmes as a first-mover opportunity in a market that has barely started to scale.

~7,800 tCO₂e avoided each year.

Four container vessels operating on international routes were retrofitted with propeller efficiency technology, cutting fuel consumption and reducing dependence on unabated bunker fuel across the fleet.

GOLD STANDARD

GS 422 Methodology

Fuel savings are monitored vessel-by-vessel against an established baseline, with reductions calculated under the GS 422 methodology for retrofit energy-efficiency measures — making every tonne traceable and auditable. The project is listed on the Gold Standard registry as the FleetRefit Programme (GS 23473), a Programme of Activities, allowing further vessels to be added over time.

Forward prepayment

First crediting period

The project is seeking forward prepayment interest against the first crediting period of five years. Prepayment funds the retrofit capital where it delivers the most abatement, and secures volume from a scarce, fully-monitored Gold Standard shipping supply ahead of the market.

Impact that goes beyond the tonne

4 Quality Education

Implementation of the retrofit programme builds technical capacity among crew and shorebased engineering teams, supporting training in energy-efficient vessel operation and maintenance.

12 Responsible Consumption & Production

By cutting fuel use by approximately 4,000 tonnes per year across the fleet, the project reduces resource consumption per tonne-mile shipped and supports more efficient use of marine fuel.

13 Climate Action

By avoiding around 13,000 tonnes of CO₂ each year, the project contributes directly to global climate-change mitigation and the decarbonization of international shipping.
