A plastic credit is a tradable certificate that represents one metric ton of plastic waste that has been recycled or collected from the environment. Credits are generated by projects that physically recover plastic waste. Typically, in developing countries where solid waste management infrastructure is lacking.
These plastic credits are bought by companies that want to offset the plastic impact that they generate from the plastic waste leaking into the environment. Companies can use the plastic credit as part of their plastic footprint reduction and mitigation strategy.
The credit income is used to upscale and improve plastic waste collection and recycling activities. Validating a social impact creates a higher value of plastic credits.
Plastic Credits allow the private sector to be part of the solution of getting the plastic waste out of the environment (plastic leakage) and repurposing it in countries that struggle to manage their plastic waste. And moreover, provides for desperately needed support for the private sector activities that directly address the plastic waste crisis in least developed countries like Senegal.
